First Football Meeting in 100 Years between Schools
MONTGOMERY – It took 100 years for Ohatchee and New Hope high schools to meet in a football game. After last Friday’s wild finish, it may take the next 100 years for the teams and fans to get over it.
Both schools each had their first football seasons 100 years ago in 1925. A last play 37-yard ‘Hail Mary’ pass from quarterback Jake Roberson to Brayden Collins lifted the host Ohatchee Indians to a 76-71 victory over New Hope. The two teams combined for more than 1,300 yards, 21 touchdowns and enough highlight reel plays to last an entire season to catapult the historic battle into this week’s first AHSAA Prep Football Spotlight of the 2024 season.
The battle, which produced a combined 147 points and set a number of single-game state records along the way, edged out a record-book performance by Piedmont High School receiver Rollie Pinto, and a milestone win by T.R. Miller High School which now stands alone as the winningest high school football team in AHSAA history.
It was indeed a special week – and many thanks to outstanding sportswriter Joe Medley of East Alabama Sports Today for providing such riveting details in the game that produced 147 points and the Ohatchee High School NFHS Network School Broadcast Program for capturing the video action for all to see.
Ohatchee quarterback Roberson was 14-of-18 passing for 361 yards and five touchdowns. Jayden Heard rushed for 178 yards and three TDs, and Nate Jones, 100 yards and two TDs for the Indians of Coach Chris Findley. Heard also had two receptions for 92 yards and one TD, and Collins had eight catches for 178 yards and two TDs. For New Hope, coached by Michael Harper, quarterback Lucas Terry was 27-of-33 passing for 490 yards and four touchdowns, Layton Pohl rushed for 161 yards and five touchdowns on 22 carries and had one TD reception. And receiver Dawson Cambron collected 18 pass receptions for 383 yards and four TDs.
Ironically, the ‘Hail Mary’ at the end wasn’t Ohatchee’s only clutch TD at the buzzer. Leading 50-35 late in the third period, the Ohatchee Indians saw New Hope, which also features the Indians moniker, score twice in a span of 19 seconds in the final two minutes of the period when Cambron scored on a 36-yard pass from Terry at 1:51 and again at 1:32 on a 16-yard run.
Ohatchee, backed up to its own 11-yard line with time for one final play in the period, went deep with Terry releasing the ball just as he got hit by the New Hope defense. Speeding open down the field was Heard, who caught the ball on the run for an 89-yard touchdown reception – and a 58-48 lead to start the fourth quarter. Ohatchee scored on a 21-yard pass from Robertson to Colby Hester with 6.4 seconds left in the first half to trim an eight-point New Hope lead to two, 28-26 at the half. And with 37.9 seconds left in the opening period, Jones scored on a 7-yard run to cut a 7-0 New Hope lead to one, 7-6.
Jones scored on a 32-yard run early in the fourth period … and the scoring stopped for almost six minutes. The final five minutes were wild, however, with five more touchdowns.
Trailing 64-48, New Hope’s Pohl scored on a 5-yard run with 4:39 left. Ohatchee rebounded with a 30-yard TD run by Heard with 2:56 remaining to take a 70-56. New Hope’s Cambron hauled in a 54-yard TD pass from Terry at the 2:22 mark, and the PAT kick trimmed Ohatchee’s lead to 70-63. New Hope turned a successful onside kick into a touchdown 73 seconds later at 1:09 with Pohl scoring on a 9-yard run Cambron. New Hope’s Harper had a surprise waiting on the PAT try. Cambron, on the receiving end of the passes, took a double reverse lateral and tossed a pass to Terry for the two-point conversion and a 71-70 lead.
That set up the final minute of play – which culminated on the final play of the night, which began at the New Hope 37-yard line with taking the snap, back peddling some 10 yards, and firing a long, high pass down the right sideline to the end zone which Collins caught for the TD – and the victory.
The records set include total yards by both teams, most points scored (147) by both teams without overtime and second most all time including overtime; the record is 150 set by Central-Hayneville and Billingsley last year in a three-OT thriller won by Central 78-72; second most points scored by the losing team (71); and most total touchdowns (21 touchdowns). Cambron’s 18 receptions rank tied for 6th all-time, and his 383 total receiving yards is second all-time behind LaFayette’s Chris Simpson, who had 412 yards versus Alabama Christian in 2000.
BEST OF THE REST
- As for Piedmont’s Rollie Pinto, he has been catching passes for the Bulldogs for several years. In last Friday night’s 2024 season opener, Pinto reached a milestone only a handful of receivers have accomplished in AHSAA prep football history when he snagged 20 receptions in Piedmont’s 34-27 win over Cherokee County. His clutch effort came against a Warriors’ team that was coming off back-to-back Class 4A state runner-up finishes. The Bulldogs have played in the Class 3A state finals twice themselves over the last four years with Pinto on the team.
Pinto finished Friday’s victory with 250 yards receiving and three touchdowns – 5, 7 and 30 yards – as the Bulldogs pulled out the victory in what has become the longest-running rivalry in both schools’ history. Piedmont (1-0), coached by Jonathan Miller, evened the 83-game series to 39-39-3 with the win. It snapped a two-game losing streak in the series to the Warriors, coached by Jacob Kelley. Piedmont has now won 11 of the last 13 meetings, however. Cherokee County won the first battle 20-0 in 1925 and reeled off five straight shutout victories from 1925-1929.
Pinto’s 20 catches fell two short the AHSAA single-game state record (22) set by of Dora’s Stevie Woods against Oak Grove in 2010 and tied him with Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa’s Cahdil Ellis (2014), Gulf Shores’ Patrick Williamson (2004), and LaFayette’s Chris Simpson (2000) for second all-time in AHSAA state history.
WEIS Radio reporter Shannon Fagan detailed the action, which ended when Piedmont quarterback Cole Wilson, who finished the night 32-of-40 for 343 passing yards and four touchdowns, connected with senior receiver Ishmael Bethel on a last-second 11-yard scoring toss near the back corner of the end zone to give Piedmont the thrilling season-opening victory. Among the highlights for the Warriors, Ben Frampton returned a kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. - T.R. Miller, coached by Brent Hubbert, beat Reeltown 28-7 in the AHSAA’s 19th annual Kickoff Classic football clash at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl last Thursday night. The Tigers go a big performance from Myles Johnson, in his first game back after missing most of his junior season with a knee injury. The University of Florida commitment rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and made eight tackles at linebacker on defense as the Tigers won the Kickoff Classic game over Reeltown 28-7.
The win was the 727th in school history – making T.R. Miller the winningest high school football program in Alabama. The Tigers finished the 2023 season tied with Oneonta High School with 726 all-time wins. The Tigers (727-335-20, 68.5%) are now all alone at the top since the Redskins lost 45-14 to Locust Fork last week.
The Brewton boys also own the winningest percentage in the AHSAA for teams with 550 or more wins. T.R. Miller’s first season was 1926. Oneonta (726-368-33) has won 66.4% of its games since beginning its first season in 1907. Blount County rival Locust Fork beat Oneonta last Friday 45-14 dropping the Redskins, coached by Phil Phillips, out of a possible tie.
Locust Fork’s Dale ‘Dino’ Embry rushed for 270 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, was 14-of-18 passing for 126 yards and two TDs and ran a put back 62 yards for another score as the Hornets of Coach Billy Adams beat Oneonta 45-14 – the first victory in the series since 2001 and just the ninth in 56 games. Embry, who had 12 tackles on defense, also had a 95-yard run for one of his TDs. The Hornets’ defense was led by Landon Keith, who had 15 tackles with four for losses and two quarterback sacks.
The last previous meeting between the two schools located in Blount County was a 62-0 win by Oneonta, which currently owns 726 all-time wins which rank second in AHSAA state history behind T.R. Miller, which won its 727th game in last week’s Kickoff Classic at Cramton Bowl beating Reeltown 28-7. The 45 points scored by Locust Fork were the most scored by the Hornets in the series history – which was first played in 1937.
